Bismillah wal-hamdulillah wa-salatu wa-salam 'ala Rasulillah, amma ba'd.
We were alerted to a post towards those who oppose the practice of Maulidurrasul which used a video of Habib Ali al-Jufri.
We are confident that students of knowledge would find it easy to differentiate an 'aalim (knowledgeable scholar) from a jaahil (ignoramus) based on the strength of proofs and evidences of their lectures by the number of quotes from the texts of the Holy Qur'an and authenticated Hadith narrations, as well as relying on the sharh (explanations) of past scholars who lived much closer to the sacred period of the first three generations of Muslims; the Sahabahs radhiyallahu 'anhum ajma'ien, the Tabi'ien (followers of the Sahabahs) and the Tabi'ut-Tabi'en (followers of the Tabi'ien).
Who is Habib Ali al-Jufri?
Ali Zain Al-Abideen al-Jifri is well known around the world. He is the founder and general director of Tabah Foundation and the deputy dean of Dar Al-Mustafa for Islamic studies founded by his shaykh, Habib Umar. He proclaims a lineage that traces all the way to Imam al-Hussein.
With a distinct lack of formal Islamic education, he proclaims a background of "classical Islamic education" with several scholars of Hadramaut and is renowned as an "explosive and motivational" speaker and a "spiritual educator".
Due to his lack of proper education, his deviant views have been refuted by many scholars including the scholars of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama'ah Association of Australia. He has also avoided invitations to open discussion & debate by Sheikh Hasan Qari Al Husayniy and Sheikh Adnan A'roor (those who are proficient in Arabic will find the videos on YouTube).
Here are some samples of Habib Ali's deviationist views:
1) In articles available on his own website and other sufi websites, Habib Ali provides additional proof how closely related the beliefs of the Sufis are with the Shi'ites, and one of the reasons why countries with strong Sufi-influenced beliefs such as Egypt, Yemen and Syria, usually have a healthy population of Shi'ites.
a) Calling the Ithna ’Asheri (The Shi'ites of the Twelve Imams) as "Muslim brothers"
b) Using "Rahimahullah 'Alayhi" as a praise and prayer for Imam al-Khomeini, the Shi'ite leader who openly accused most of the Sahabahs and all the Ahlussunnah Wal Jamaah to be disbelievers
2) A video entitled "Journey" on Habib Ali's website, Guidance Media, chronicles the Pilgrimage to the Grave of Prophet Hud. The video shows close resemblance to Grave Worshipping and the Hindu practice of immersing in the Ganges River for purification.
Who came up with this? Where is the proof from the Qur’an or from the words of our Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam or in the actions of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs? Or the Sahabah? Or from the blessed three generations that followed the Prophet Muhammad Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam?
a) The video starts off by saying: -“seeking purification and forgiveness they congregate at base of Hud canyon, where the grave of Prophet Hud rests on the mountainside”
b) The video narrator says - “The tradition has been there for at least 1000 years. Shuyukh [plural of sheikh] visiting this location and doing the tarteeb that we did, swimming in the river, making the intention for ghusul [the Islamic ritual bath] having sins removed every time you make this ghusul, every time you dip your head under making this intention”.
We hope these evidences are enough for Muslims to be able to evaluate the actual status of Habib Ali al-Jufri and those who follow & propagate his teachings.
The Prophet Sallallahu 'Alayhi Wasallam said:
"Verily he among you who lives [long] will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided Caliphs – hold on to it tightly. Beware of newly invented matters, for every invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a misguidance, and every misguidance is in Hell-fire."
(Found in Imam an-Nawawi’s Forty Hadith, collected by Abu Dawud & At-Tirmidhi, who classed it as authentic.)
